His eyes burst open, and he found himself strapped to an operating table with a group of people around him, Marta included.

“His eyes are open!” one person announced in shock.

Marta rushed over to him and pet his hair. “Shh, shhh,” she shushed to Nathan who was looking around the room frantically. His body was strapped down with metal threads, and his head was in a contraption that kept it in place. One of the other physicians finished filling a needle with something and injected it as quickly as he could into a plastic tube that ran into Nathan’s left arm. His breathing slowed its pace, and his eyes drooped down until they closed.

There was a large mirror above all the scientists, behind which a group of men in suits sat and observed the procedure. Hateful Brother was included in the observation room. All the other men there were his higher-ups in one way or another.

“Okay, let’s try another method,” said Marta. “The compound, N, N - Dimethyltryptamine.”

One of the lab-coats held up a glass vial containing the psychedelic in a clear liquid form. Another injected a syringe into the vial and extracted a fair portion of the content. Marta was given the syringe and she prepped it with a flick.

“Administering sixty-six milligrams of Dimethyltryptamine directly into the optic nerve of subject Two-four-six-oh-one’s right eye.”

It seemed every scientist there had a minor function, as another stood over Nathan and placed an eye clamp that hooked around and inside his right eye lid. Marta’s syringe approached Nathan’s eye for insertion, and slid its way in. The barrel was plastic, leading to a thin, high-tech, multi-beveled needle coated with lubricants which helped its entry be as smooth as possible.

“Dawn Redwood,” she said calmly.

Nathan’s pupil dilated, and Marta looked up to the mirror quickly before continuing.

“Injecting now.”

The syringe was planted right in the middle of the two over-lining circles and diamond pattern. Marta pressed down slowly, then retrieved the needle and placed it behind her. The original lab-coat removed the clamp and stood back.

“Time is eighteen-eighteen, April eighth, twenty-twenty.”

Everyone was silent. Marta leaned over Nathan and whispered to him.

“…This is Synophy.”

He didn’t respond.

“Synophy,” she repeated, louder and slower.

He took in a deep breath and replied, “Synophy.”

Marta smiled and continued. “Where is Symon, Enn?”

“I don’t know,” he whispered slowly.

“You must know. You have seen it, at the bottom of the lake.”

“It calls me to it.”

“Try and remember. Think of a name, anything. The country, a nearby mountain, or the lake itself?”
